How to buy a diamond online
Buying a diamond does require a basic understanding of the terms used in determining different diamond qualities.
If you are shopping for loose diamonds a little bit of research is needed to make sure you get something you are happy with. Of course every diamond jeweler knows that it’s not a simple task so they (mostly) offer educational pages. The first piece of advice that any diamond buying advisor will tell you is to first decide on your budget.
If you stick to what you can afford you’ll associate the diamond with a happy time (not a stressful time!) and also take away much of the stress from the buying process.

This will help you learn how to buy a diamond. This basic knowledge will serve as s key to understanding a diamond’s quality. It’s essential for the decision making process.
- Diamond Color Refers to the level of color present in the stone. The less color in the stone the more valuable it is. The difference between two color grades is gradual but directly impacts the overall quality and price of the stone.
- Diamond Clarity is a way of quantifying the amount, size and location of internal characteristics called ‘inclusions,’ as well as external ‘blemishes.’ The best grade is ‘Flawless,’ where virtually no imperfections can be detected under magnification, down to ‘Included,’ which has a significant number of imperfections.
- Diamond Cut refers to to the proportion and arrangement of its facets and the quality of workmanship. The amount of brilliance, sparkle and fire (colorful flashes) in a diamond is determined by cut. Grades of diamond cut quality range from ‘Excellent’ to ‘Poor.’
- Diamond Carat is how a diamond’s weight is described. The higher the carat weight, the more expensive the stone, all else being equal. Two diamonds of equal carat weight, however, can have completely different quality and consequently have a huge difference in price if the other three Cs are disparate.
Choose a jeweler
This is an important part of the process. I have already included a list of jewelers I recommend. Having referred customers to many of the above jewelers for many years I know that they are reliable, trustworthy, and provide the attributes one would hope to find in a jeweler: good customer service, generous return policy, good variety, good quality settings.
