How to Clean and Maintain Diamond Jewelry

  1. Get a clean bowl. You can use a sink, but you probably want to avoid the risk of having the ring go down the drain.
  2. Fill the clean bowl with warm water and allow your diamond jewelry to soak in it for 5 minutes.
  3. Pour window cleaner in a small bowl, large enough to accommodate your ring. Other ammonia based cleaners are ok too. Instead of window cleaner you may use any non-bleach non-abrasive cleaner. Dish soap can work as well.
  4. Remove the ring from the warm water and place in the bowl that contains the liquid cleaner.
  5. Leave the ring submersed in the cleaner for a minimum of 10 minutes.
  6. The ring can now be scrubbed with a soft toothbrush.
  7. Refill the first bowl with warm water and place the ring in it for 5 minutes.
  8.  Rinse under flowing cold water while gently scrubbing it with the soft toothbrush.
  9. Switch to warm water for the final rinse.
  10.  If the ring still looks like it needs cleaning repeat the process from the beginning.

Additional points:

Try your best to scrub the bottom of the diamond if accessible.

Don’t use a toothbrush on gems which are under 7 Mohs on the hardness scale.

Get a toothbrush exclusively for the purpose of cleaning your diamond ring.

Many people simply leave their ring to soak overnight in cleaning liquid once a week and scrub it in the morning.
