- Get a clean bowl. You can use a sink, but you probably want to avoid the risk of having the ring go down the drain.
- Fill the clean bowl with warm water and allow your diamond jewelry to soak in it for 5 minutes.
- Pour window cleaner in a small bowl, large enough to accommodate your ring. Other ammonia based cleaners are ok too. Instead of window cleaner you may use any non-bleach non-abrasive cleaner. Dish soap can work as well.
- Remove the ring from the warm water and place in the bowl that contains the liquid cleaner.
- Leave the ring submersed in the cleaner for a minimum of 10 minutes.
- The ring can now be scrubbed with a soft toothbrush.
- Refill the first bowl with warm water and place the ring in it for 5 minutes.
- Rinse under flowing cold water while gently scrubbing it with the soft toothbrush.
- Switch to warm water for the final rinse.
- If the ring still looks like it needs cleaning repeat the process from the beginning.
Additional points:
Try your best to scrub the bottom of the diamond if accessible.
Don’t use a toothbrush on gems which are under 7 Mohs on the hardness scale.
Get a toothbrush exclusively for the purpose of cleaning your diamond ring.
Many people simply leave their ring to soak overnight in cleaning liquid once a week and scrub it in the morning.
